Starting and growing your business is pretty tough. On top of the hurdles from HR and compliance, there’s a lot to do and a lot that can go wrong.

We started Justworks to make it all just a little bit easier. We wanted to make hiring and employing people as simple as possible, so that you could focus on what matters: your business and your people.

Today, we’re excited to announce a feature that will make your life a little easier: company-level permissions. This new feature will allow you to give individual team members access to different functionalities within Justworks.

Up until now, we’ve had two user-states in the Justworks dashboard: admins and regular users. Admins had access to all features in Justworks - from payments to reporting to time off - while regular users have only been able to view limited information and enroll themselves in benefits. However, we understand the need for a little bit more nuance for user access - after all, your accountant needs to see reporting, but he/she doesn’t care in the least about paid time off.

How It Works

If you are currently an admin for your company, you should now be able to see a menu item called Permissions.

The first step to give someone a permission is to make them an admin. Only admins can have permissions. You’ll be able to make any users into an admin in the Company-level Permissions page or on their individual user page. Once a user has been made an admin, you can add him or her  to any of the permissions available.

We’ve broken permissions into four sections:

  • Settings: this includes anything related to your company settings and your Justworks account.

  • Payments: this includes anything related to outgoing payments, including reports.

  • Company HR: this includes all HR related functionality, such as time off, documents and user management.

  • Benefits: this includes all benefits including healthcare, perks and more.

Within each section, there are functionalities associated with that section. If you click into the functionality, you can see a longer explanation of what it does and add/remove admins. If you’ve been using Justworks, the permissions themselves should be pretty clear, but we’ve also added suggestions about which kinds of roles normally have these permissions to help guide you.

On The Horizon: Managers

We hope Permissions will make it easier to run your business on a day-to-day basis. Now that you can delegate these responsibilities, your HR manager can approve time off while your CFO can make payments herself.

Next up, we’re building manager functionality in Justworks. With this functionality, any managers in your company will be able to approve time off and manage other non sensitive related to their direct reports.
