Complete Guide to Running a Small Business in Q2 2026

Q2 is the pivot quarter. Here's how to make the most of it.

Tax season is (mostly) behind you, summer is closer than it seems, and your team still needs someone to keep payroll running, check compliance boxes, and keep everything moving smoothly.

Q2 doesn't get as much attention as Q1 or Q4, but it's one of the busiest quarters for HR and operations. Benefits questions spike, hiring picks up, performance conversations are happening, and the financial calendar doesn't take a break just because April 15 has passed.

This guide is your Q2 playbook.

It covers the compliance moments you can't miss, the people ops work that tends to pile up, the financial tasks still on your plate, and a month-by-month calendar to keep it all organized. We've also built in a short section on what to start thinking about for Q3—because the best time to prepare is usually earlier than you think.

  • Read it straight through for a full Q2 picture

  • Jump to the section most relevant to your role right now

  • Use the calendar in Section 4 as your operational anchor

Key Q2 HR & Compliance Moments

Q2 has a surprisingly full compliance calendar. The good news: most of it is predictable. Here's what to watch for, month by month.

April

If you're a self-employed owner or have partners in your business, Q1 estimated tax payments are due April 15.

If your company missed any 1095-C or 1095-B distributions at year-end, April is your window to fix them before they become a compliance issue.

Your Q1 federal payroll tax return (Form 941) is due April 30, and many state equivalents follow the same schedule.

Check Your Coverage Q2 is a natural time to confirm your workers' comp coverage is current and correctly reflects your headcount.

If you hired people in Q1, April is a good time to do a quick audit.

EEO-1 season is a perennial pain point; the federal portal is notoriously difficult to navigate, and filing requirements often feel unclear for smaller companies.

Post-Q1 is one of the most natural times to update your employee handbook, PTO policies, or workplace procedures—especially if something changed in the business last quarter.

May

Memorial Day falls on May 25 this year.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a good prompt to make sure your employees actually know about the mental wellness benefits available to them.

If your company does any kind of formal or semi-formal performance check-ins, May is the time to schedule them—before everyone's calendar fills up with summer PTO and OOO blocks.

If summer hiring is on your roadmap, May is when you should be getting your process ready—not June.

Know Your Obligations Q2 hiring often means more employees crossing eligibility thresholds for state disability and leave programs.

Q2 is when a lot of businesses get audit requests—from lenders, investors, boards, or insurance carriers—and suddenly need to pull payroll and workforce data quickly.

June

The second quarterly estimated tax payment is due June 16.

Benefits questions are one of the highest-volume support topics we see during Q2—and Qualifying Life Events are the #1 most-viewed Help Center topic during this period.

If your benefits renew in January, it might feel too early to think about renewal in June. It isn't.

If you started performance reviews in May, June is for wrapping them up—finalizing feedback, formalizing pay decisions, and communicating outcomes to employees.

Q2 is a common time for bonus payouts and equity-related compensation to be finalized and recorded—especially for companies that tied bonuses to Q1 or H1 performance.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Make sure it's correctly configured in your payroll calendar and that your holiday pay policy is set up as intended.

Managing Workloads and Burnout Heading Into Summer

Coverage gaps, PTO overlap, and a slower-but-still-moving business can create real strain—especially on managers. Getting ahead of this in May saves you a lot of scrambling in July.

Pull a report on who has unused PTO and who hasn't taken any time off recently. Employees who aren't using their PTO are often your highest-risk burnout cases—and ironically, your highest performers. A simple nudge from a manager can make a difference.

Onboarding and Offboarding: Q2 Hiring Patterns

Q2 is one of the most common hiring periods of the year, and at the same time, some employees choose early summer to make transitions. Here’s how to handle simultaneous onboarding and offboarding without dropping the ball.

When did you last update your onboarding process? If it was before a policy change, a product update, or a shift in how your team works, it's showing your new hires an outdated picture. Take 30 minutes now to review it.

Performance, Feedback, and Goal Check-Ins

You don't need a complex performance management system to handle mid-year reviews. You just need to do it consistently.

By the time June rolls around, calendars fill up fast with end-of-quarter deadlines, summer PTO, and all the compliance items in Section 1. Get H1 check-ins on the calendar in May, so they actually happen.

Time Tracking and Hourly Workforce Management

If your company has hourly or non-exempt employees, Q2 is a critical time to make sure your time tracking setup is right.

Don't wait until week one to figure out how your hourly employees are clocking in, who's approving their timecards, and how overtime is being calculated. Set it up now, test it, and brief your managers.

Section 3

Money, Taxes, and Planning

Tax season may feel like it's over, but for small business owners, the financial calendar doesn't really pause. Here's what's still in play and what to be thinking about.

*If you work with an accountant or financial advisor, share this section with them. It maps directly to conversations they're likely already planning to have with you in Q2.

What's Still in Play Post-Tax Season

If your S-Corp or partnership return was filed on extension, the deadline is September, but the planning work starts now. Talk to your accountant about what documentation you need to gather and whether any Q2 activity (distributions, compensation changes) affects your return.

Q2 Quarterly Filings and Payments

Here's what's on the compliance calendar for Q2:

  • April 30: Federal Form 941 (Q1 payroll taxes) due

  • April 30: FUTA deposit due if Q1 liability exceeded $500

  • June 16: Q2 estimated individual income tax payment due

  • Ongoing: State unemployment insurance (SUI) filings—one of the most commonly misunderstood payroll obligations for small businesses, and one of the most-searched topics in our Help Center

State unemployment insurance rates and filing schedules vary significantly. If you're operating in multiple states, or recently hired in a new state, it's worth a quick check to confirm you're registered and filing correctly.

Questions to Ask Your Accountant or Advisor in Q2

Bring these into your next conversation:

  • Are we on track with estimated payments to avoid penalties at year-end?

  • Should we revisit our entity structure based on Q1 revenue?

  • Are there any Q2-specific deductions we should be actively tracking?

  • How does our payroll and benefits spend compare to the budget? (Your Justworks reports can help answer this.)

  • Do we have the right retirement plan structure to maximize owner contributions?

  • If we're involved in a merger or acquisition this quarter, what are our obligations around payroll, benefits, and reporting?

On retirement specifically: If you're not sure whether a traditional or Roth 401(k) structure makes more sense for your business and employees, it's worth a conversation—both with your accountant and with your employees.
